History of the Atlantic Museum

The fictional Atlantic Museum of Civilization was founded in 1898 by a generous bequest from the personal library and collection of Clarence MacDonald, founder of the Atlantic Freight Line.

As a freighter crewman and eventually captain, Mr. MacDonald made a habit of collecting books and antiquities in every port he visited. It is said that as his company grew and he added ships, he encouraged all of his ship captains to gather antiquities and historical documents for him, even offering bonuses for new and unusual artifacts. As his company grew, so did the collection that would eventually form the Atlantic Museum.

The original bequest from Mr. MacDonald included one of the largest known collections of written and inscribed objects, as well as a diverse collection of artifacts from around the world that has yet to be completely catalogued.
